City Center Partnership (CCP) celebrated the downtown Business Improvement District’s (BID) eighth year anniversary at its annual meeting on Monday, November 9, at the Columbia Museum of Art. A reception followed the meeting across the street at Gotham Bagel Café.
An informative and entertaining video was shown during the meeting that included what’s been going on over the past few years in the heart of downtown Columbia and showcased many of those who have made things happen. The video can be reviewed on CCP’s website at www.citycentercolumbia.sc.
Terry Brown, CCP Chairman and CEO of Edens & Avant, presented the Chairman’s award to Larry Hembree, Executive Director of the Columbia Film Society. Brown called Hembree “the hardest working nonprofit guy in town” and a catalyst for the revival of the Nickelodeon and the driving force behind the theater’s moving to their new and exciting location on Main Street.
Steve Benjamin, outgoing Vice Chairman of CCP, also received the Chairman’s award for his dedication on many fronts to the organization over the past six years. During Benjamin’s term, there was a renewed focus on revitalizing the heart of Main Street and a greater emphasis on office recruitment efforts.
Brown also said good-bye as the current Chairman of CCP, and he welcomed David Lockwood of Colliers Keenan as the 2010 Chairman of the organization.
What is a Business Improvement District
A Business Improvement District (BID) provides enhanced improvements and activities, such as security, maintenance, and marketing, in addition to those services provided by local government. A property-based BID is based upon the “benefit assessment district” concept, which provides for an assessment on real property and improvements upon real property to be raised within a specific geographic district with the proceeds directed back to the district to provide enhanced services that benefit the district and properties located within the district boundaries.
